Why this portfolio works

Rural and small-town communities are often overlooked by national donors, yet they are home to some of the most durable, creative civic organizing in the country. This portfolio backs organizations that build trust across distance, sustain local institutions, register and organize voters, support mutual aid networks, and make sure rural voices shape the decisions that affect their lives. These groups know their communities best — and they need reliable, flexible support to keep going.

Rural civic life takes more than one kind of organization. This portfolio combines statewide rural organizing, human rights and civic education, tribal-led community development, cross-county regional collaboration, and island community resilience — so organizations working at different points in the system reinforce one another.
