Why this portfolio works

Healthy democracies depend on communities that know what is happening and who has power. This portfolio backs independent local newsrooms, civic journalism collectives, community radio, and media training programs that tell stories the national press misses, hold local institutions accountable, and give people the information they need to act together.

A healthy information ecosystem takes more than one kind of organization. This portfolio combines local accountability newsrooms, Spanish-language civic news, fact-checking and media literacy, statewide political reporting, and financial support for nonprofit newsrooms — so organizations working at different points in the system reinforce one another.
